Fremantle has been named ahead of some of the world’s most famous cities as one of the top 10 cities to visit in 2016, by Lonely Planet. Australia was number 6 on the top 10 countries to visit list, named for 'booming' Indigenous tourism and 'a roaring trade in UNESCO World Heritage wilderness areas'. Australia was also noted for being great for value for money for overseas travellers. Western Australia was named as Number 10 for best value destinations.
The list for Lonely Planet's 'Best in Travel 2016' - top 10 cities includes;
- Kotor, Montenegro
- Quito, Ecuador
- Dublin, Ireland
- George Town, Malaysia
- Rotterdam, the Netherlands
- Mumbai, India
- Fremantle, Australia
- Manchester, United Kingdom
- Nashville, USA
- Rome, Italy
At number 7, Fremantle was the only Australian city to make the 'Best in Travel 2016' – edging out Australia’s more popular destinations like Sydney and Melbourne. Lonely Planet's annual publication details the hottest travel trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the coming year.
The publication described Fremantle as "a raffish harbour town with sea-salty soul to burn" and "It's a delicious process, and nowhere in Australia does it better. Fremantle thrums with live-music rooms, hipster bars, boutique hotels, left-field bookshops, craft-beer breweries, Indian Ocean seafood shacks, buskers, beaches and students on the run from the books.”
Fremantle has hosted well known events like America's Cup yachting race and is the home of much loved restaurants, cafes and a University, Notre Dame. Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the honour was timely as the city was undergoing great transformation with more than $1.3 billion of private and public investment in the development pipeline and new bars, hotels and restaurants opening continuously. The minister is also hopeful that this media coverage and exposure for Fremantle and Western Australia will bring more visitors both internationally and national.
